The trust vehicle at your fingertips

It's easy to think of your website as a brochure or leaflet, displaying a list of products or services that your business offers.

However, your website is so much more than this. It's a vehicle for trust between you and a potential customer.

Prospective customers will often not have heard of your business previously. They may find you through online searches or perhaps a word-of-mouth recommendation.

One of the first things that they'll do is to take a look at your website. They want to know who you are and how your business can help them with their problems.

The first impression that someone receives after they reach your website can make a big difference. In many cases, it's simply the difference between someone choosing to contact you or visiting your competitor's website instead.

If your website is outdated or lacking in terms of content, you're making it harder for someone to trust you. For example, you could have a copyright date in the footer from 2 to 3 years ago, or more. Do you think that truly shows a prospective customer that your business cares about its appearance?

Make sure you regularly look at your website and put yourself in the shoes of a potential customer. Think about what their first impression would be when they look at your site.
Is your website modern and easy to use on both a desktop computer and a mobile device? You need to remember that many people will browse your website on their smartphone or tablet computer.

Is there enough information that answers the questions that a potential customer might have? Make sure your content is up-to-date and that you're making it easy for a potential customer to realise they're in the right place to get the help they need.

Are you encouraging a potential customer to contact you? It sounds silly, but there are a lot of businesses who make it unintentionally difficult for someone to contact them. Be clear on every page and let people know how and why they should contact your business.

Your website isn't a brochure. It's an important stepping stone on the trust journey for your potential customers.
