The most important email

First, Eid mubarak if you're celebrating it. Hope you’re enjoying the long holiday with your dearest ones.

Today's email is about the importance of welcome emails:

There's a type of email that you can send out which is one of the most important that you'll ever send. It's a welcome email. You might already be using it, but most business owners that I talk to aren't.

Welcome emails are used for newsletter opt-ins, lead magnets, course sign-ups, specific product purchases, and in many other scenarios. They're the first step in the journey that a new subscriber or customer will have with your business.

As a welcome email is the first email that someone will receive, it sets the tone and standard for what follows next. If you want to nurture and grow better relationships with your subscribers or customers, you need to be using welcome emails.

According to research carried out by Hive, welcome emails have a 91.43% open rate. They're an email that your new subscriber is expecting in their inbox after signing up, so they'll almost always be opening it.

You don't just have to stop at one email either. A single welcome email is a great start, but a sequence of emails is even better.

A good rule of thumb is to consider a welcome email sequence of around 3-5 emails in length. This gives you an opportunity to properly welcome a new subscriber, share your story and set expectations for what is to come. You can also include a pitch for your products or services.

Here's an example email sequence you could send:

  • Welcome & Intro - This email welcomes the new subscriber and thanks them for joining your email list. You'll set some initial expectations here such as when and how often you'll be sending emails to them.
  • About You / Your Business - This is a great opportunity to talk about your business and also to share your own personal story. Let your subscribers know why you do what you do.
  • Pain Point - This email will be about a specific pain point that you help your customers to solve. For example, if you were a dentist that offered teeth whitening services, you could talk about the benefits of a confident smile.
  • Case Study / Testimonials - In this email, you can share a short case study from one of your customers or a handful of reviews if you prefer. You're showing your subscriber the results that real people have had when purchasing your products or services.
  • Pitch - In the last email, you're going to send a pitch for your products or services. This email will tap into the problems that your customer suffers from. You'll explain how the product or service that you offer is a solution. You can even offer a limited time discount code here to encourage someone to take immediate action.

Taking the time to make a great first impression can do wonders in your business. It helps you to build trust with a new subscriber. People buy from those they know, like and trust - so it's very helpful to start establishing trust early.

The best thing about welcome emails is that you don't have to send them manually. Welcome emails or email sequences can be set up using automation. All major email platforms such as ConvertKit or ActiveCampaign, offer email automation.

When you're using automation, a new subscriber will automatically be sent your welcome email after they sign up. For an email sequence, you'd usually set this to send out one email per day.

So you only need to create and set up a welcome email sequence once. After that, automation will take care of everything for you, leaving you to focus on other tasks in your business.
