I wanted to share a little information about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) with you today.

There’s a common misconception that you can just purchase SEO services and then your website will magically be at the top of the search results.

Unfortunately, SEO isn’t like going into your favourite store and picking something up off the shelf. It’s a strategy and something that takes time to create and bring to fruition.

Think of it more like going to the gym. Perhaps you want to build up muscle or lose some weight.

If you go to the gym once and have a single workout, you’ll make a small step forwards but you won’t see any progress. A single gym session will give you minimal impact.

However, if you go to the gym regularly over an extended period of time, you will see progress. Carrying out regular consistent work will help you to build muscle or lose the weight that you wanted to lose.

This is how SEO works. The first step is to put together a strategy. Then this strategy is actioned over time.

Typically an SEO campaign can take around 3-6 months before you start seeing good results. This might feel like a long time, but you have to remember that the search engines need a bit of time to trust and understand the value of your website.

If the length of time worries you, there are a few things that you can do to get some quick wins whilst the SEO strategy is being carried out.

For example, you could choose to run paid ads at the same time as SEO. This allows you to be in front of potential customers almost immediately, while still gaining the benefits of SEO over time.

In fact, your SEO agency will likely use paid ads as part of their strategy as it gives them an opportunity to test keyword ideas out. Keywords are words and phrases that a user would type into a search bar to find what they’re looking for. Knowing the right ones are invaluable to customers finding you.

When you’re looking for SEO services, make sure that you ask the company about their processes. Ask them to explain to you what they do and realistically how long it might take for a website like yours to find success.

If anyone promises to you that you can have “guaranteed results” or that it’s a one-off service, this is your cue to run for the hills. A huge red flag.

Instead, look for a partner who is able to answer your questions and is open with you about what is really involved with an SEO strategy.
