Get in front of an instant audience

Podcasting is a popular way of sharing valuable and interesting information with an audience.

There are over 2 million podcasts around the world. Hundreds or even thousands of them are talking about topics that relate to your business.

Starting a podcast needs quite a bit of time investment and for the average business owner, it’s probably more time than you’d want to put in right now. But this doesn’t mean that you can’t benefit from podcasting.

Instead of creating your own podcast, you can be a guest on someone else’s podcast.

Being a podcast guest, gives you an opportunity to talk to someone else’s audience. You can tell your story, as well as share some tips and valuable information.

Podcast episodes are usually under an hour in length, although this can vary between podcasts. The average length of a podcast is around 25 - 30 minutes.

As a guest, you’d need to make yourself available for the recording time. The majority of podcast interviews will be carried out remotely, unless you’re appearing on a larger podcast that has a full studio setup.

To start finding podcasts that are relevant to your niche, you can look in Apple Podcasts, Spotify or Google Podcasts. These are three of the larger directories where you’ll be able to find the majority of podcasts.

Each of these platforms have categories, so you can go through the top 100 or so podcasts in each category and look for some potential options.

When you’re first starting out with being a guest, it’s good to focus on smaller podcasts. This gives you an opportunity to have a practice run and to meet some really interesting small podcast hosts.

You should always listen to a few episodes before you reach out to the host. It’s important to get a feel for the podcast and to make sure that they do feature guests. There’s no point reaching out to someone asking if they need guests, when they only run a solo show.

Once you’ve found some good options and made sure they’re a good fit, now it’s time to reach out to the host. This is where you can send a friendly email, telling them what you like about their podcast and asking if they’re looking for podcast guests.

In your email, you can talk about your background and any potential topic ideas that you’d be happy to talk about. For example, if you’re a real estate agent and you’ve found a podcast that talks about home improvement - perhaps you have an interesting angle on how this work can increase the value of their homes.

After this, you’ll likely be asked for a few extra details from the host and then you’ll be able to book your guest spot.

Don’t forget that you should make sure you promote your appearance on the podcast to your own audience. This is a great way of building rapport with the podcast host and showing them that you value being on their show.

Now it’s over to you. Can you get yourself a podcast guest spot in the next 30 days?
