Be more privacy friendly

One of the most important things to have in place is the ability to track how your visitors are using your website. This is carried out through analytics software.

Google Analytics is the most popular option for website owners. It’s a free service provided by Google, first launched in November 2005.

Over the past decade, the increase in privacy laws and concerns has led to people being more aware of the tools companies are using on their websites.

Google Analytics works through the use of a cookie. This is stored in a user’s browser and allows Google to track how a user navigates through a website.

In many countries worldwide, the user should be asked to consent before the cookie is used. This is why you’ll often see cookie consent pop-ups when you’re browsing online, as the analytics cookie from Google is just one of the things that you may be asked to consent to.

It’s also worth remembering that when a service is free, it usually means that you are the product. In the case of Google, they’ll be able to use the data you’ve collected from your website to improve their targeted advertising.

You can compare this to a social media product such as Facebook. Here, you’re the product as you’ll be shown adverts as you scroll through their website. Those ads will target your likes, interests, and even websites you’ve browsed.

So, what sort of alternatives are there to Google Analytics?

One of the most popular alternatives is Fathom. It’s a paid product, starting at $14 per month. For this price, you’re able to track up to 50 websites.

Fathom works differently from Google Analytics. They are privacy-focused, so they’ve taken steps to ensure that data is anonymized and personal information is not stored. This means that they don’t use cookies, and depending on anything else you use, you may not need a cookie consent banner on your website.

There is, of course, a cost implication, as Fathom isn’t using your business's data for advertising purposes as Google does. However, you benefit from a solution that cares about the privacy of individuals and complies with privacy laws around the world.

We’ve been using Fathom in our agency for the past six months. Not only has it been great for privacy, but we’ve also found a slight boost in website speed. The forthcoming changes at Google and the need for users to migrate to Google Analytics 4 have made adopting Fathom a no-brainer for our agency and our customers.

For companies that care about the privacy of their users, a tool like Fathom could be an ideal option. You still get all the benefits of tracking how people use your website, but you’re not storing any personal information.
